Texas Tough Plants for Austin

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension-Travis County kicks off the 2024 Texas Tough Plants webinar series with Native and Adapted Plants for Central Texas and Wild About Plants, February 21st, 10 am to noon.

Skip Richter, Texas AgriLife Extension Service Horticulturist (retired) and host of GardenLine on KTRH 740 AM, will discuss some of the best native and adapted plants for creating a beautiful landscape in central Texas that can tolerate extremes of heat and cold, drought and deluge.

Denise Delaney, the City of Austin Watershed Protection Department’s Acting Education Program Manager, will follow with Wild About Plants and tell us more about the Grow Green program philosophy of using the right plant in the right place. The program utilizes a webinar format.

About Skip Richter

Skip received his master’s degree in Horticulture from Texas A&M University, “the source of all earthly knowledge.” He served as a horticulturist with Texas AgriLife Extension Service for 35 years (including Travis County.) His attention is now directed to being a radio host, gardening speaker, garden writer, contributing editor for the Texas Gardener magazine, and avid horticultural photographer.

Skip is an enthusiastic student and teacher of natural gardening techniques. He helped develop Extension’s “Don’t Bag It” yard waste recycling programs, the “Composting for Kids” educational web page, and the Grow Green environmental education program which educates Austin area residents on landscaping practices to protect water quality.

Skip has served as the National Gardening Association’s regional horticulturist for the southeastern U.S. and is a contributing editor to Texas Gardener magazine. He hosts the GardenLine radio show on KTRH in Houston on Saturdays and Sundays from 6 to 10 a.m., which reaches from the Louisiana border to central Texas. His book, Texas Month-by-Month Gardening provides guidance on planting and caring for your garden and landscape every month of the year.

He received the County Extension Agent Award from the Texas Nursery & Landscape Association in 2023 and was selected as a Regents Service Fellow by the Board of Regents for the Texas A&M University System.
